The gradient is the vector generalization of the derivative.

For a function $f\left(\right[x_1,\dots ,x_n{]}^T)$, the gradient ${\nabla }_{x}f\left(\right[x_1,\dots ,x_n{]}^T)$ is the vector containing the $n$ partial derivatives of $f$ with respect to each $x_i$.
